Descending Television Show
The Descending team hit the road, travelling the world in search of aquatic adventures, a greater understanding of our oceans and its creatures, and set forth to make incredible discoveries in the process.
We follow travelers Scott Wilson and Ellis Emmett on their audacious journey, which takes them to the far reaches of our planet and oceans.
Along the way they encounter astonishing marine life, along with diverse people and cultures, and they have more than their fare share of close calls.
Scott and Ellis explore rich tropical reefs in Sudan, dive with Great White Sharks in South Africa, discover historic wooden shipwrecks of the Great Lakes of North America, and investigate the freezing, crystal-clear fissures of Iceland, diving between tectonic plates.
Penetrating deep within remote shipwrecks, free diving with whales and descending to over 1,000 feet beneath the oceans surface – is ‘just another day in the office’ for Scott and Ellis as they discover our planet one ocean at a time.
‘Descending’ is a 13-part adventure travel, dive series spanning well over one year, 16 countries and 5 continents around the globe.
A Life Long Journey Begins
New Zealand is a sub tropical divers mecca. Being two relatively small islands positioned between the South Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea. New Zealand’s long and narrow shape covers a sizeable latitude for such a small country. This equates to a wide range of currents and water temperatures. The waters are rich in nutrients; in many places the seabed plunges deep into the ocean very close to shore, causing an up-welling of currents. These currents supply an enormous amount of food to support the immense biodiversity of marine life that lives around New Zealand’s coastline.
Over the past 20 or so years Ellis has accumulated over one thousand dives to his credit, the bulk of these as a recreational diver. He describes himself as ‘just a cray-diver’, alluding to the huge crayfish (New Zealand lobster) that he usually catches while diving. But as many fishermen, sailors and divers alike know, to do your time in New Zealand waters, means that you have experienced and endured a vast array of adverse conditions.
New Zealand is renowned for its very unpredictable climate and seasons, and frequent storms can sweep the coastline at any time of year, whipping the ocean to a terrifying fury.
Scott Wilson and Andre Dupuis have known Ellis for over ten years. They have travelled together, worked together and shared many adventures all around the world together.
In 2005 when Scott and Andre first came to New Zealand, to film their pilot for Departures, Ellis took them diving. While at the time neither of them had their dive certificates, they were happy to wait on shore, stoking the bonfire, for the huge feed of crayfish, which Ellis was hunting for beneath the oceans surface.
As their travel show Departures drew to an end in 2009 they began thinking forward to their next project. They began to look to the oceans. All of this time they had been exploring our world, on land, then they suddenly realised that they had overlooked the biggest part – WATER!
And so ‘Descending’ was born!
From The Descending Team
For more than three years our team has shared countless exhilarating adventures with millions of people around the world through our highly acclaimed television program, Departures. Now we are about to embark upon a new global adventure to share with an even greater audience.
The core team from Departures is moving on to a more challenging project now. Having experienced every continent on the planet, we are turning our focus to the greater portion of the earth’s surface: the water. Harnessing the same wanderlust that was established with Departures, the new show – Descending– travels to some of the most fascinating dive sites in the world, encountering historic wrecks, exhilarating creature encounters and forgotten cultures, all while showcasing the interaction of man and water. This comes at a time when awareness of the fragility of our rivers, lakes and oceans has never been greater.
While accomplished divers, the hosts, Scott Wilson and Ellis Emmett, are not scientists or expert ‘tech divers’. They are simply, real people who enthusiastically seek out new experiences and challenges, both above and below the surface.
Each episode will feature the challenges and rewards of getting to the destinations as well as thrills and experiences enjoyed at the destination itself. Throughout the season, the skills of the team as divers continue to grow on camera enabling ever more unique and challenging dives.
About the Show
Nearly three quarters of our planet is water. No matter how tall the highest peak, how vast the broadest desert or how inhospitable the polar caps, they’re all insignificant compared to what lies beneath the waves.
Descending is a 13-part documentary that will take viewers on a year-long journey exploring the submerged treasures of our planet (both natural and man-made) with breathtaking beauty and life-threatening excitement possible on every descent.
Descendings well-travelled hosts, Scott Wilson and Ellis Emmett, aim to awaken the adventurous spirit in all of us as they experience stunning environments and fascinating cultures around the globe, connecting the world on land to the one undersea.
An aquatic adventure series for a new generation, Descending is shot in stunning High Definition by award-winning cinematographer Andre Dupuis and pushes the boundaries of existing digital camera technology.

I used to watch Ellis back in the day when he was one of the travelers. So it was cool to find out through departures that he and scott new each other. I started watching departures about three years ago. Found it to be very refreshing and Andre, Justin and scott are easy to like. These three guys were doing what most of us dream about but never do. So for me watching this show is freeing in some way. I even watch reruns. I am in Fort McMurray, Alberta and the new show descending is on at 7 AM and right after is departures. So thanks for educating us guys and be careful out there. rosa
Hello, love the show but missed what happened to Scott. Is he ok, what happened? I like the show with Justin as well. What is he doing now, where is he?
Great Job Justin, Scott, Andre and Ellis.
I miss Scott though. He was funny.
Hi there,
Thanks for your email.
Scott is ok 🙂 The Descending shows are soon coming out on DVD’s, so you will be able to purchase the whole series. Keep your eyes open on Descending Facebook page or their web site.
Not sure what Justin is doing currently.
Regards,
Sanna (on behalf of Ellis)
After watching Departures, I had no doubt that Descending would reach or exceed the standard set by the team – and was extremely pleased when I found out Scott’s new dive partner was Ellis! Ellis’ high energy and enthusiasm was contagious, and only made my interest in scuba diving stronger. The cinematography was amazing, the hosts were perfect for the show, and the locations were beyond belief! An inspiring show to just make you want to get up and get out and see exactly what is out there, and discover new things.
I’d recommend the show to everyone – I already do! – And look forward to the next project 😉
To watch Descending was like being taken to another world – the epitome of couch-travel, but with the added extra of being so real, so possible, so captivating, that I believe I won’t be alone in actually getting up and trying it out for myself.
There seems to be a real lack of shows these days that are not only worth watching, but that can educate, entertain and just amaze all at once. With filmography comparable to Nat Geo – but with a crew who make it far more light-hearted and relatable than just a documentary, Descending kept us all on the edge of our seats and laughing along, and made those Sunday nights something to look forward to rather than dread!
With so few people knowing exactly what is out there, I think they all have done a great job in showing us the effects of what’s going on behind closed doors – but enabling us to open them and act upon it. I really wish this show could be broadcast to a much wider audience – it’s impossible not to get hooked! – and they need far more credit for what they are doing. People should be looking up to people like the Descending crew – down-to-earth people with a sense of adventure but also consideration to the world that gives us so much!
Once again, an amazing show, amazing people – Go Team!
I wish them all the best for the future and look forward to part two! 😉
– Ashlee x, Canada –
My family and I have faithfully watched Descending, settling down every Sunday night to spend quality time together watching quality television.
Descending is not just a t.v. show though. It is an event. Andre, Ellis and Scott take us into their world. Andre with his stunning cinematography and Ellis and Scott with their personal stories, their humour and their adventures. The show brings families together.
Inspired by Descending, my son and I have decided to learn how to dive together this summer. We have been educated together about the world and are looking forward to planning some adventures of our own.
The world is big, but Descending makes it seem a more accessible and warmer place to live. Thank you to the Descending team for giving us something to look forward to.
