‘The Dominion Post’ – Two boaties were rescued trying to cross Cook Strait in a three-metre wooden dinghy. Senior Constable Paul McKenzie said, ” It was a miracle the pair had got as far as they did. It was the most dangerous things I’ve ever seen.”

New Zealand Herald – Two boaties who crossed Cook Straight in a wooden dingy with oars made from broomstick handles have been attacked……. The pair, a New Zealander, Ellis Emmett and a Dutchman Sander Verbiest, sailed from Wellington on Sunday. Astonishingly, they crossed Cook Straight unharmed, but when they reached the entrance to Tory Channel they capsized.

In last weeks incident, Ellis Emmett (33) of Cheviot and his dutch friend, sailed from the Kapiti coast, 70 kms north of Wellington with intentions to sail to Gore Bay (a journey of approximately 300 kms). Mr Emmett said, “We understood the risks we were taking and our trip, as far as Gore Bay was definitely achievable.”

A Cheviot man is quietly carving out a television career in Canada. Nobody took him seriously, so he decided to travel the world to get the experience he needed. After a chance encounter in Cambodia he met up with Canadian film crew and has since been offered the position of television presenter for the adventure travel show. ‘Don’t Forget Your Passport’ is syndicated to 80 countries with an estimated audience of 65 million viewers.
