Ellis Emmett, the Cheviot man, who sailed across Cook Strait in the nautical equivalent of a 1972 Vauxhall Victor, is not just a random crazy adventurer, this diary is pleased to reveal. Police are calling it foolish, but Cheviot man Ellis Emmett says his ill-fated trip across Cook Strait in his tiny boat is all part of an ‘adventurous antidote to everyday life’. Ellis Emmett spent his Easter weekend attempting to sail a 3.5m dinghy with a sail across the treacherous Cook Strait and down the coast to Gore Bay, near his home.

‘The Dominion Post’ – Two boaties were rescued trying to cross Cook Strait in a three-metre wooden dinghy. Senior Constable Paul McKenzie said, ” It was a miracle the pair had got as far as they did. It was the most dangerous things I’ve ever seen.”

New Zealand Herald – Two boaties who crossed Cook Straight in a wooden dingy with oars made from broomstick handles have been attacked……. The pair, a New Zealander, Ellis Emmett and a Dutchman Sander Verbiest, sailed from Wellington on Sunday. Astonishingly, they crossed Cook Straight unharmed, but when they reached the entrance to Tory Channel they capsized.
